Imaginary Walks. The revealed collection and rediscovered work of Eugene Berman (1899-1972).
Civita Castellana (VT)
Extended to Sept. 6, 2025, the exhibition Imaginary Walks. The Revealed Collection and Rediscovered Work of Eugene Berman (1899-1972), dedicated to the extraordinary figure of Eugene Berman, a multifaceted artist and cultured collector, at the National Archaeological Museum of Agro Falisco and Forte Sangallo in Civita Castellana (VT).
Curated by Elisabetta Scungio, Sara De Angelis and Monica Cardarelli, the exhibition offers a never-before-seen overview of Eugene Berman, exploring how his artistic practice and his collection intertwine in a unique and profound dialogue.
The exhibition features a selection of significant works created by the artist, ranging from painting to theater, alongside some of the most representative pieces from his kaleidoscopic private collection, enriched by archaeological artifacts and objects from around the world, offering an interesting key to understanding his aesthetic and intellectual pursuit.
Long kept in the Forte Sangallo's storage rooms, Eugene Berman's objects and works are revealed to visitors by an accessible and interactive exhibit that offers the public a sensory and immersive experience suitable for all. The exhibition itinerary, which runs along the main floor of Forte Sangallo, includes evocative reconstructions of some corners of the artist's Roman house-museum, enriched by multimedia installations that show the interweaving of Berman's works, passions and private life.
The exhibition thus represents an opportunity not only to enhance a section of the museum deposits kept in the cells of the monument, usually hidden from the general public, but also to rediscover an eclectic artist of the 20th century, highlighting the strategic role of the National Archaeological Museum of Agro Falisco as a reference point and meeting place for the dissemination of cultural heritage in the territory, placing side by side with the archaeological finds, presented in the museum's permanent exhibition itinerary, the historical-artistic, graphic and ethnographic collections preserved in various capacities within its spaces.
The enjoyment of the exhibition will also be expanded by guided tours and lectures conducted by the curators and specialists in the subjects covered by the varied Berman collection, who, on a monthly basis, will offer the opportunity to discover more about the work of the artist/collector, exploring its different aspects. The calendar of collateral activities will be communicated on the website and social profiles of the Regional Directorate National Museums Lazio.
On Tuesday, February 11, 2025, tour guides working in the Lazio region will be able to participate in a one-day meeting at the National Archaeological Museum of Agro Falisco and Forte Sangallo in Civita Castellana.
The meeting aims to be an opportunity to get to know and dialogue with the tour operators who usually work in the places of culture pertaining to the Directorate, with the intention of establishing closer and more fruitful collaborative relationships. A special moment will be devoted to the illustration of the outreach and special opening initiatives that the Regional Directorate National Museums Lazio is planning for both the Fortress and other monumental sites in Tuscia.
