Ulysses Riviera Festival
Sperlonga (LT)
National Archaeological Museum and Villa of Tiberius (Sperlonga, LT)
Thursday, August 29, 21:00
A new event at the National Archaeological Museum and Villa of Tiberius that is the result of a collaboration between the Lazio National Museums Regional Directorate and theRiviera of Ulysses Regional Park Authority.
As part of the Riviera di Ulisse Festival on Thursday, Aug. 29 at 9 p.m. actor Giuseppe Pestillo will interpret one of the most significant cantos of the Odyssey, the 9th, interspersed with musical improvisations by Sandro Sposito.
The setting for the reading will be the imposing sculptural group of the Blinding of Polyphemus, found in the cave of Tiberius' villa, narrated in Canto IX of the Odyssey where Homer recounts the encounter between Odysseus and Polyphemus, one of the most emblematic and symbolic episodes of the entire epic.
Ulysses, in Latin, Odysseus in Greek, represents human ingenuity, wisdom and adaptability. During his encounter with Polyphemus, he uses his cunning to save himself and his companions from imprisonment and death.
Polyphemus, on the other hand, represents the wild and uncontrolled nature, the brute force that knows no reason. He is a monstrous figure, not only because of his appearance, but also because of his lack of hospitality and his cannibalistic behavior.
An encounter that of Odysseus and Polyphemus symbolizes the struggle between civilization and barbarism, between human intelligence and the dark forces of nature.
