Depicting St. Thomas: a history of images - St. Thomas House in Aquinas
Aquino (FR)
On the occasion of the eighth centenary of the birth of St. Thomas Aquinas, the Regional Directorate National Museums Latium invites the public to visit the educational exhibition "Representing St. Thomas: A History of Images," a journey through the evolution of his iconography, which moves to the evocative setting of the House of St. Thomas in Aquino from May 17 to July 13, 2025, after the exhibition period in the rooms of the Abbey of Fossanova.
St. Thomas Aquinas, the "Doctor angelicus," is a beacon of medieval thought who inspired not only theologians and philosophers but also great poets such as Dante Alighieri. In the Divine Comedy, Dante reserved a special space for him in cantos X, XI and XIII of Paradise.
The figurative arts have repeatedly depicted the saint, dressed in the Dominican habit, with a radiant sun on his chest and symbols of chastity, wisdom and faith, such as the lily and the monstrance. His life and thought have always been a source of inspiration for many artists.
