Villa Lante
Bagnaia (VT)
Villa Lante in Bagnaia - a hamlet of Viterbo - with its eighteen hectares of park and formal garden, represents one of the greatest examples of 16th century green architecture. This supremacy was enshrined in the 2011 award of Italy's Most Beautiful Park.
In 1566, Cardinal Giovan Francesco De Gambara from Brescia, who had been appointed bishop of Viterbo, chose the medieval village of Bagnaia as his residence and began to transform the early 16th-century hunting reserve commissioned by Cardinal Riario into a veritable villa di delizia capable of competing in magniloquence with the most important cardinal's residences of the time, such as Villa d'Este in Tivoli and Palazzo Farnese in Caprarola.
The villa is characterized by the formal garden, with four terraces enriched by fountains and the water features, and two mansions richly decorated with frescoes and stuccoes. The entire architectural design is attributed to Tommaso Ghinucci.
Since 2022, the park has been reopened with the original rustic garden that looked like a diverse succession of groves and productive sectors, traversed by an articulated system of avenues enlivened by fountains and plant arrangements.
Per effetto del DM n° 53 del 9 febbraio 2024 Villa Lante entra a far parte dell’Istituto autonomo Ville monumentali della Tuscia.
