Modern Age
Palazzo Altieri
Oriolo Romano (VT)
Palazzo Santacroce, later Altieri, was built during the years 1578-1585 and its construction phases indicate the different periods of presence of the three historically owner families: the Santacroce from its foundation in 1578 to 1604, the Orsini from 1604 to 1671 and finally the Altieri from 1671 to 1971.
Palazzo Altieri looks like a typical sixteenth-century palace-villa, with a large park now owned by the municipality. The rich decoration of the rooms documents the evolution of taste over the centuries, also preserving furniture and furnishings of the time. Among the works of greatest interest, the cycle of frescoes with biblical scenes among grotesques stand out, some attributable to the young Giovanni Baglione; the gallery of portraits of the "Belle" by Ferdinand Voet and workshop, significant evidence of the licentious contemporary fashion; the Dining Room, an example of eclectic neoclassical decoration, and the Gallery of the Popes, which houses the complete series of portraits of the popes in chronological order starting with Saint Peter.
Per effetto del DM n° 53 del 9 febbraio 2024 Palazzo entra a far parte dell’Istituto autonomo Ville monumentali della Tuscia.
