National Archaeological Museum of Tuscania

The National Archaeological Museum of Tuscania is housed in the suggestive setting of the former Franciscan convent of Santa Maria del Riposo. The convent was founded in 1247. In the fifteenth and sixteenth century various renovations left it with the elegant Renaissance form it has today. The central cloister is framed within a colonnade of round arches, supported by richly decorated capitals. The building served as a convent until 1875. In 1970, Tuscania’s town council chose it to house the Archaeological Museum.

In 1988 a first section of the Museum opened on the ground floor, while in 1997 and 2007 the two exhibition wings on the upper floor were set up. Archaeological finds from the area are on display, alongside the history of the Campanari family, inextricably linked to the history of excavations of the territory and the "fortune" of Etruscology in the nineteenth century.
