Materials for the forma urbis of Centumcellae

The next appointment with I Giovedì dell'Archeologia, scheduled for February 13, 2025 at 5:30 p.m., is dedicated to Materials for the forma urbis of Centumcellae . Simone Gargiulli (Sapienza University of Rome) presents a study that aims to reconstruct the urban layout of Centumcellae through the analysis of archaeological remains and historical plans. Despite some difficulties in accessing documents and materials, an archaeological map based on a cadastral map has been drawn up, with particular attention to the location of the finds. The study examines the settlement of Centumcellae using archaeological, literary and epigraphic evidence, proposing a new interpretation of the urban planning of Portus Traiani. It focuses on the formation of a settlement around the port call, an aspect not addressed in previous studies. Supporting the hypothesis that the settlement along the Via Aurelia arose after the foundation of the Trajan port, it considers Pliny the Younger's account of the construction of the port.
