The Ships of Nemi. Places and memories to the future - European Archaeology Days 2024

On Friday, June 14 at 10:00 at the Museum of Roman Ships in Nemi, on the occasion of the European Archaeology Days, the Memorandum of Understanding recently signed between institutions of the Ministry of Culture, the Regional Directorate National Museums Lazio, the Superintendence of Archaeology Fine Arts and Landscape for the metropolitan area of Rome and the province of Rieti will be presented to the public; by the two university branches the Iuav of Venice and the Department of Architecture of Roma Tre; by the National Research Council, especially for activities within the purview of ISMAR (Institute of Marine Science); and by the "Leonardo Da Vinci" National Museum of Science and Technology Foundation in Milan.

The proceedings will be introduced by Director General Museums Massimo Osanna in the presence of representatives of all public and private institutions that signed the agreement.

The purpose is to promote a "Documentation and Study Center" at the Nemi Museum, which would have as its research object the entire nemorense context and could serve as a sounding board for all studies on the ancient and modern landscape, the history of Lake Nemi and its slopes, the excavations of the Sanctuary of Diana and the recovery of the famous Roman ships, the Museum that housed them for only five years, from the date of its inauguration until the fire of 1944, and current and future projects.

The various institutions involved intend to "promote the establishment of a "Documentation and Study Center" at the Museum of Roman Ships in Nemi, which will serve as a reference for all Italian and foreign universities, schools and individual scholars who will be involved in research and study projects on related topics, with the aim of supporting the study and enhancement of the historical heritage, archaeological, architectural, artistic, anthropological and documentary heritage related to the Museum of Roman Ships and its collections, with particular regard to the history of the discovery and recovery of Caligula's ships and the establishment of the Museum and the findings from the surrounding area, an indispensable element for a correct interpretation of the function of the ships themselves."

The newly established Documentation Center will now have to start its work through the establishment of the Technical and Scientific Committee that will have to draw up the strategic plan for the pursuit of the objectives set forth in the protocol.

Also presented in the morning will be the ongoing projects on the Museum, which have emerged from a lengthy process of philological reinterpretation of architect Morpurgo's original design, and are aimed primarily at restoring the volumes and surfaces of the Museum and ensuring better use for the public.

Finally, the newly edited issue of Rivista di Storia dell'Arte, which welcomes some of the ongoing studies by young doctoral students and researchers on the ships, the context of their discovery, and and the Museum's architecture, will be presented to the public.
