The Thursdays of Archaeology - Fourth Edition Cycle of cultural meetings on antiquity and the territory

The Thursdays of Archaeology of the National Archaeological Museum of Civitavecchia are back: the series of cultural meetings on antiquity and the territory is now in its fourth edition.

This year's lectures are nurtured by the synergy of intent between the museum's management and the new Civitavecchia City Council, in the persons of Mayor Marco Piendibene, Deputy Mayor Stefania Tinti and Executive Gabriella Brullini (Culture Office), who immediately recognized the cultural value of the series of meetings and expressed their desire to support it as a cultural activity that has been attracting a vast number of experts and citizens for years.

The meetings, curated by museum director Lara Anniboletti and archaeologists Alessandro Mandolesi and Maria Rosa Lucidi, will feature researchers, academics and archaeologists who will take stock of new historical and archaeological investigations related to Civitavecchia and its territory over the centuries. In particular, the topics will cover some of the cornerstone sites in the area, such as the Etruscan sanctuary of Punta della Vipera, the Roman Centumcellae, Aquae Tauri and Castrum Novum and, finally, the rediscovered medieval town of Cencelle.

We look forward to seeing you on November 28 at 5:30 p.m., in the presence of Elisabetta Scungio, Regional Director National Museums Lazio (Ministry of Culture), for the first appointment Rediscovering the medieval town of Cencelle between archaeological excavation and new interdisciplinary approaches, dedicated to the medieval town. Professor Giorgia Annoscia, head of the archaeological mission in Lviv-Cencelle of La Sapienza University of Rome, will explain the last thirty years of excavation, from the foundation of Pope Leo IV to its transformation into a farm; Dr. Giulia Previti, will guide us through the discoveries made on the stone materials on the archaeological site, thanks to the techniques of traceology applied to archaeology. Dr. Giulia Casagrande will delve into aspects of the early medieval necropolis, recently investigated with new analyses of physical anthropology, including the study of paleopathologies, which have revealed new data on the living conditions of Cencelle's "community of the dead."

Lectures will be held on Thursdays at 5:30 pm at the Cialdi Library (Calamatta Square, 18, Civitavecchia) from November 28, 2024 until April 3, 2025.
