European Archaeology Days 2026

On June 12 and 13, the museums and archaeological sites under the Lazio Regional Directorate of National Museums will participate in the European Archaeology Days (EAD) with guided tours, children’s workshops, lectures, special openings, and events dedicated to exploring the archaeological heritage of our region.
From Civitavecchia to Formia, passing through Tuscania, Civita Castellana, and Minturnae, a program of events designed for audiences of all ages.

Athena: The Story of a Restoration
A meeting with the conservators from De.Co.Re. srl dedicated to the restoration of the statue of Athena Parthenos, a Roman copy of Phidias’s famous sculpture for the Parthenon in Athens. The conservation project, supported by the Art Bonus from the National Communications Foundation, is part of a broader enhancement program promoted by the Lazio Regional Directorate of National Museums. An opportunity to learn firsthand about restoration work and the role of public participation in the preservation of cultural heritage.

“The Body That Remains. The Prothesis in the Etruscan Urn from Civitavecchia and Contemporary Resonances”
Guided tour of the exhibition “
” A journey through archaeology and contemporary art centered on an extremely rare Etruscan urn from Cerveteri, an exceptional testament to ancient funeral rituals, in dialogue with the works of Massimo Luccioli. The tour will also provide access to the museum’s new third floor, opened exceptionally to the public as part of the project to redesign the exhibition spaces.

Etruscan Reflections: An Interactive Tour Through Myths, Mirrors, and Craftsmanship
Themed tour for adult visitors. The tour will guide participants on a journey of discovery through the myths and symbolism associated with Etruscan mirrors, featuring an impromptu demonstration of ancient artisanal techniques of painting and embroidery inspired by Etruscan motifs.

Make an Etruscan mirror
Creative metal engraving workshop for children. After the workshop, the objects created by the participants will be on display at the Museum for a few days.

Communicating the Ancient, Communicating the Future of the Etruscans.
The Pyrgi Experience: Sapienza University of Rome’s “Grande Scavo” Lecture by Prof. Maria Laura Michetti on the themes of communication and the promotion of Etruscan heritage, drawing on the experience of Pyrgi, one of the most important archaeological research sites in ancient Etruria and Sapienza University of Rome’s “Grande Scavo.”

MINTURNAE ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK AND THE KING FERDINAND BRIDGE

Glimpses of History. From Rome to Minturnae: The Appian Way Told Through Images. Presentation of the photography exhibition dedicated to the Regina Viarum and its significance for the founding and development of Minturnae. Followed by a guided tour of the archaeological site.

Friday, June 12 – 4:00 p.m.
Archeology in the Dark. Touching time, feeling history. An activity for children ages 6 and up, organized in collaboration with the “Sinus Formianus” Cultural Association. Participants will be guided on a journey to discover the characteristic materials of classical art—marble, granite, and other types of stone, bronze, and clay—through a sensory experience that emphasizes the sense of touch.
