Elementa - Riccardo Monachesi

The Regional Directorate National Museums Lazio is dedicating to Riccardo Monachesi, an artist who uses ceramics as his main expressive medium, the exhibition Elementa, curated by Simona Ciofetta, in the spaces of the Certosa di Trisulti: the artist's entire path is traced by 26 installations, consisting of more than 400 pieces made from 1990 to the present, created for this occasion in dialogue with the Certosa: an installation in rooms charged with history and memories, some of which are open to the public for the first time.

The exhibition is part of the Directorate's contemporary art program, which promotes the relationship between its sites and artists, who are called upon to interpret the spirit of the places with installations that include some specially designed works.

An anthological exhibition of Monachesi's production, promoted by the Regional Directorate National Museums Lazio for the Certosa di Trisulti, which finds, in a peaceful invasion of its paths, a precise relationship with the monumental site, its history and its memory.

Elementa is the title that was born thinking about the essence of Monachesi's works often composed of several pieces, in a way that the author himself varies as if composing a printed page with typographic characters, with elements each endowed with expressive autonomy but capable of recalling their similar ones in multiple compositions charged with meaning, which we can read in organized successions or completely free, such as the Cubes or Titles.

Ceramic art is taken by Riccardo Monachesi to a very high level of technical research that involves in the creative process that randomness linked to the very essence of clay: a yielding and responsive substance that the artist almost never completely constrains into rigid formations or set colors, in a process that becomes a constant contest between the action of man and the response of matter.

In a succession heralded by the light resonance of the Shells moved by the wind, to give just a few examples, we move from the Pneumi, organic forms that include the need to breathe to Dona of Morandian memory, from the Wings, a thought of freedom, to the Semilune, an architectural sign in contradiction with real architecture that is transformed into a celestial body, up to properly religious subjects such as a Via Crucis of personal interpretation and the Saint Sebastian, identified with the column, an architectural symbol par excellence and a symbol at the same time of martyrdom: again a unique but decomposable sculpture, from whose same creative process the Carte, pictorial works, also originate, bearing its traces as so many shrouds.

The exhibition catalog is published by the Regional Directorate National Museums Lazio and contains a preface by Elisabetta Scungio, director of the Directorate, an introduction by Ursula Piccone, director of the Certosa di Trisulti, curator Simona Ciofetta's critical essay with descriptions of all the works on display, a dialogue between curator and artist, and bio-bibliographical apparatus.
