The "Deposits (re)discovered...in Nemi" project is the result of an important collaboration between the National Roman Museum and the Lazio Regional Museums Directorate, which will allow for a new voice to be given to the many artifacts usually kept in the deposits through a series of short but unprecedented exhibitions.
A true "museum within a museum" the one enclosed in the more than thirty rooms that now constitute the storerooms of the National Roman Museum and that guard a very rich patrimony, unexpected in quantity and historical-artistic quality: sculptures, mosaics, frescoes, terracotta, marble and bronze artifacts, unearthed from the institution of Roma Capitale until today.
A stage of exceptional importance is the one that features the Museum of Roman Ships in Nemi: surrounded by an evocative landscape setting after decades of oblivion, a series of works related to the funerary sphere returns to be exhibited: sarcophagi, altars, reliefs, sculptures and inscriptions, evidence of the vivid and varied sculptural production of the period between the 1st and 4th centuries AD.
The exhibition itinerary, ideally arranged along the Via Virbia that leads to the Sanctuary of Diana Nemorense, opens and closes with two works related to the cult and mythology of the goddess: a statue of Artemis/Diana depicted as a huntress and a mosaic with a scene from the myth of Apollo, twin brother of Artemis, and Daphne, a naiad hunter devoted to Diana.
Visitors are advised that on the occasion of the exhibition opening, the museum will open at 10:45 am.
