Special Openings of Cicero's Tomb

Cicero's Tomb in Formia, in the province of Latina, has reopened to the public.

The archaeological site, located along the Appian Way on the outskirts of town, is reopening to the public after a prolonged closure due to facility upgrades and its transfer to the jurisdiction of the Lazio Regional Directorate of National Museums, an agency of the Ministry of Culture that oversees many of the region’s most interesting archaeological, historical, and religious sites.

The imposing mausoleum, dating to the late Republican era, is traditionally attributed to the famous Roman orator and statesman, who owned a villa in Formia and met his death there in 43 B.C. at the hands of Mark Antony’s assassins. The monument stands in the center of a picturesque garden of conifers, olive trees, laurel trees, and citrus trees, planted during the restoration work of the 1950s within the original sacred enclosure. It is a setting of great charm, where visitors will have the opportunity to discover an important archaeological site, relive a crucial moment in Roman history, and enjoy a splendid green space.

Cicero's Tomb will be open to the public free of charge for self-guided tours on the following dates:

Sunday, September 6 – 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.;
Sunday, September 13 – 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.;
Sunday, September 27 – 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.;
Sunday, October 18 – 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.;
Sunday, November 1 – from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Admission is free, and visitors may explore the museum on their own.
