National Etruscan Museum of Rocca Albornoz

The National Etruscan Museum of Rocca Albornoz , inaugurated in 1986, is housed inside the imposing Rocca Albornoz, built in 1354 by the vicar general, Cardinal de Albornoz, to control the ecclesiastical possessions. Julius II della Rovere, in the early 1500s, was responsible for the renovation of the monument to a design by Bramante, which involved the transformation of the fortress from a purely military structure to a Renaissance palace. It was then Paul III who completed Bramante's project by also providing for the construction of a large external loggia open to the square. The rocca was then used as a papal residence, a brefotrophy and finally barracks, leading up to the heavy devastation of World War II.

Since 1986 it has housed the National Etruscan Museum, which presents evidence from the most representative centers of internal southern Etruria including the exceptional life-size reconstructions of buildings from the Etruscan center of Acquarossa, the mosaic with an Etruscan inscription from Musarna, a small town near Viterbo, emblematic and extremely rare evidence of the Romanization process in Etruria, or the prestigious Etruscan bronze chariot found in the center of Ischia di Castro.
