Montecassino Abbey
Cassino (FR)
The Montecassino Abbey National Monument is one of Italy’s main Benedictine sites. It was founded by Saint Benedict of Norcia, in 529, on the site of an ancient tower and temple dedicated to Apollo. Though destroyed by bombing on February 15, 1944, it was rebuilt after the Second World War. Today, the monument dominates the cultural landscape of Cassino, unique to the historical, religious and architectural history of Italy.
The museum boasts a very rich collection of prints and geographical maps, chorals and manuscripts, as well as a room dedicated to sacred vestments and ivories. The art gallery is home to some of the most interesting works by Neapolitan masters of the eighteenth century.
