Church of Santa Maria Maggiore
Tuscania (VT)
In the 11th century the city of Tuscania was an important diocese. The church of Santa Maria stands at the foot of the civita, along the Via Clodia, and was its first cathedral; the only one, by ancient privilege, to have an immersion baptismal font with basin.
The building's origins date back to the 8th century, but the church was almost entirely rebuilt in the late 11th and early 12th centuries and later remodeled to assume its present three-aisle form. Inside, some of the original frescoes that decorated the entire building are preserved. Of value is the depiction of the Last Judgment above the apse basin.
