Greek Abbey of St. Nilus and Museum

Grottaferrata (RM)

Greek Abbey of St. Nilus and Museum

The Greek Abbey of San Nilo was founded in 1004 by a group of Greek monks from southern Italy, led by Saint Nilo from Rossano. The abbey church was consecrated in 1024 and the monastery grew up around it. There was a particularly intense building and decorative period during the mid 1100s.

It is the last of the numerous Byzantine monasteries that were widespread throughout southern Italy and in Rome itself in the Middle Ages. The museum retraces the history of the monastery and surrounding territory.
