Latium, guardian of civilization - Minturno and Cassino
Discovering the Roman roots and historical memories of southern Latium in the third episode of "Latium, Guardian of Civilization" with Elisabetta Scungio, Regional Director National Museums Latium, and Cristiana Ruggini, Director of the Archaeological Park of Minturnae and Ponte Real Ferdinando.
We continue our journey to the Archaeological Park of Minturnae, located along the ancient Appian Way. Here, among the remains of the city, we will trace the importance of the ancient Roman colony. We will discover its more recent history through the wartime memories of the Garigliano River, which marked one of the hardest fought borders of the Gustav Line. Over the river, the striking Royal Ferdinand Bridge, a masterpiece of Bourbon engineering, now links past and present.
The second stop takes us to Casinum, the ancient Roman city that was an important strategic junction and, centuries later, the crucial theater of the Gustav Line during World War II. Extraordinary works of solidarity also emerged from the conflict, such as the moving "Trains of Happiness," which offered children in the hardest hit areas an opportunity for rebirth and hope.
