Certosa di Trisulti

Collepardo (FR)

Certosa di Trisulti

Pope Innocent III entrusted the Order of Carthusians with the construction of the Certosa di Trisulti in the early 1200s. Nowadays it houses the National Library of the Certosa. The lion in front of what’s known as the Palace of Innocent III has survived from mediaeval times, when it was a part of the church furnishings.

Prominent among the buildings is the 18th-century Pharmacy, which testifies to the main activity of the Carthusian Monastery until modern times, relating to the production of medicines and liquors. The interior retains its 19th-century furnishings, showcases with apothecary jars and cabinets containing herb boxes. In the entrance and waiting room, the refined decoration by Neapolitan painter Filippo Balbi shines.
